“Yellowstone” invites viewers into the dramatic world of the Dutton family, owners of Montana’s largest connected ranch, the fictional Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. The series captures their struggle to maintain control over their generational property amidst pressures from outside developers. This turmoil spills over into the neighboring Broken Rock Indian Reservation and Yellowstone National Park, creating a modern-day Wild West scenario that occasionally turns violent.
Led by writer and director Taylor Sheridan, the show features a cast of strong characters: Kevin Costner plays family leader John Dutton; Wes Bentley portrays the troubled Jamie Dutton; Luke Grimes is the devoted Kayce Dutton; Kelly Reilly stars as the fiery Beth Dutton; Cole Hauser embodies the tough yet romantic Rip Wheeler; Kelsey Asbille plays the thoughtful Monica Long; Gil Birmingham is Thomas Rainwater; and Mo Brings Plenty, played by himself, rounds out the cast.
“Yellowstone” first premiered on the Paramount Network in 2018, with its initial three seasons filmed primarily in Utah. Starting from the fourth season, production moved to Montana. The series showcases stunning locations, adding authenticity to its storytelling.
Explore Utah’s filming spots, like Ogden, where the exterior of the Schwartz & Meyer bank building at 2505 Lincoln Avenue appears. Stroll down 25th Street, a lively area featured in the series, with its shops, eateries, and art venues. For a full “Yellowstone” vibe, unwind with a drink at The Outlaw Saloon and enjoy the Odgen Pioneer Stadium rodeo.
Further south in Spanish Forks, rodeo scenes were shot at the Spanish Fork Fairgrounds. In Park City, you can spot Dan Jenkins’ luxury lodge at the Nicklaus Clubhouse. Consider dining at The Peak restaurant or watching the sunset from the View Deck.
In Montana, filming spans across sights in and around Missoula. Visit Ryman Street and Ruby’s Café, sites of a dramatic shoot-out. Beth Dutton’s encounter with Carter outside a hospital was shot at the Missoula Community Medical Center. Notable scenes also occurred at The Missoula County Courthouse and the Garlington Building. Another spot is Glen’s Café in Florence, where John Dutton enjoyed a Salisbury steak, and fans can purchase “Yellowstone” T-shirts.
Near Missoula, explore Gray Wolf Peak Casino located at the southern edge of the Flathead Reservation. The series’ ranch setting is filmed at the Chief Joseph Ranch in Darby, a working guest ranch nestled in the Bitterroot Valley.
Historically, the Chief Joseph Ranch traces back to homesteaders in 1880, establishing the Shelton Ranch, and later transformed by William Ford and Howard Clark Hollister starting in 1917. The lodge became known as Chief Joseph Ranch in the early 1950s but is currently not open for guest reservations.
In Hamilton, the Montana Livestock Association building features at 163 S. 2nd Street. Scene locations, including a car chase, are on Meridian Road and Bear Creek Road. The Daly Mansion here also serves as the governor’s house, offering tours and serving as a museum and wedding venue.
Filming for the governor’s office occurs at the Montana State Capital in Helena, where virtual tours and summer guided visits are available. While the state capital appears in season one, the Missoula County Courthouse stands in during season five for John Dutton’s swearing-in.
South of Billings, the Crow Reservation provides the backdrop for the fictional Broken Rock Reservation. This area serves as the location for the Tribal Casino at Apasaalooke Nights Casino.
Season four introduces the 6666 Ranch, where Jimmy learns the cowboy trade at this historic site, founded in 1870. Situated near Guthrie, the ranch is known for its American Quarter Horses and Angus Cattle. Visitors can stop by the 6666 Supply House, unchanged since 1900. This location is slated as the setting for a new “Yellowstone” spinoff, joining others like “1883,” “1923,” and “Bass Reeves.”
